Panel Discusses Overlap of Precision Technology & Nutrition
Farm Talk breaks down a recent Oklahoma Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics panel discussion about using precision technology to make the food supply “more reliable.” “We’ve always been striving to improve by using new tools and techniques,” says Brian Arnall, Oklahoma State University crop precision management professor. “What we’re doing is we’re making the food supply more reliable.”
The Oklahoma Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics hosted a panel moderated by Mike Schulte, left, executive director of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission, which included Brady Sidwell, of Enid, James Blom, of Waukomis, and Dr. Brian Arnall, a precision nutrient specialist at Oklahoma State University. Exploring the Impact of GPS Issues from May Solar Storms
GPS is used on 70% of U.S. cropland for at least one purpose, according to the USDA, and many farmers experienced significant GPS issues during solar storms the weekend of May 10-12. This Successful Farming article explores the impact of the event. “The next generation of autonomy is being developed to use machine vision, artificial intelligence, and expert systems for guidance to avoid vulnerability to GPS outages,” says Kansas State professor Terry Griffin. “When future GPS outages occur during peak field operations, farm operators should be certain if the problem is a local hardware issue or geomagnetic event; knowledge of the possible repercussions of solar activity is important.”
When the Rain Won’t Quit
Dryland corn yield record-holder Russell Hedrick shared this funny video earlier this week on Facebook about the wet spring much of the U.S. is dealing with.
