Jake Rianda says customers are going to go where they can get their data, and whether it’s yield data or in-season agronomic data, he believes farmers will eventually gravitate toward dealers who can provide the information that can show them how efficient or inefficient their operation is.
The last couple of years have seen hiring in the precision department slow as dealerships have been more conservative with where and how they invest in personnel. More emphasis has been placed on retention and cross-training of existing staff, to provide more flexibility with customer service offerings and sales.
Scott Meldrum, integrated solutions manager for Van Wall Equipment, talks about the growth of the dealership's precision department. When Meldrum started working at Van Wall about 6 years ago, the dealership had 3 AMS specialists at 5 locations. In 2016, they now have 10 AMS specialists at 16 stores. They've also added agronomy positions to the Integrated Solutions department. Van Wall Equipment earned top honors in Farm Equipment's 2016 Dealership of the Year program.

The college offers an associate degree in Applied Science in Agriculture (60 credit hours). Students enrolled in this program may specialize in precision farming technology by selecting up to 15 credit hours in this area and agriculture business, sales and agronomy.
